Bear & Fire Safety

Living with Bears

Bears are very present in the Rubicon community. While we have not experienced bodily injury in our community due to contact with Bears, we have had many cabins and cars broken into and in some cases, severe damage was incurred.

To keep our community and properties safe, we encourage all Homeowners and Cabin Renters to stay vigilant in discouraging Bears from entering homes and cars.

Top actions that can be take to deter the bears are:

  • Garbage should be placed in a secure Bear Bin/Box

  • Clean your car of any food items or good smelling products. (Remove sunscreen, food wrappers, napkins, etc.)

Visit the Fish & Wildlife website for important tips for minimizing Bear issues.

Fire Safety

Fire safety continues to be critical for our community. Given the fire events in 2021, it is essential that Homeowners do their part to protect our community by taking home hardening and defensible space actions.

We encourage all Homeowners to visit the North Tahoe Fire website for safety actions and to inquire about scheduling a safety inspection.

In early 2021, a group of RTO homeowners formed a Fire Safety and Preparedness Committee. Their intent is to help get RTO designated as a Firewise Community. Firewise is a National Program that helps communities with education about fire preparedness and provides guidance on actions to take to mitigate fire risk. Becoming designated as a Firewise Community not only increases a communities safety, but can potentially help to lower insurance costs.

The Fire Safety Committee will support RTO with communications, educational resources and will serve as a contact point with North Tahoe Fire on our community’s behalf.

If you are an RTO Member, please be sure your email address is up-to-date on the Member Portal to ensure you will receive emails periodically from this group via the HOA email routing. (Visit the Member Portal page for more information about the Portal).

For more information about Rubicon Fire Safety efforts, submit a message on the contact page and a member of the Firewise Committee will get back to you.
